Dear Emily: My Apologies

Dear Emily,
Let me apologize up front for the differences that you will have in your life for being the second child. Please know that I went into this whole situation wanting to do everything exactly the same as I did with your sister to make things as fair as possible. But now that you're here, I've realized that doing things exactly the same, and keeping my sanity, is simply not possible. I am sorry...

-that you will have hand me down clothes from your sister. Just know that her clothes are hand me down as well, thanks to The Levy Family. Don't worry - I'm sure we'll get you some things of your own things to help you feel extra special.

-that your handprints were not taken when you turned one month old (unlike your sister). Hopefully we will get them when you turn three months.

-for not taking as many pictures of you as of your sister. It probably won't be equal to the hundreds of pictures we took when your sister was first born, but I promise to document all the special moments and changes you have.

-that I compare you to your sister. Please know that we realize you two are individuals and will do things differently; it's just fun for your Dad and I to reflect on the different behaviors. I promise to not hold you to the same expectations as your sister and to allow you to travel down your own path in life.

-that you will not have the same experiences as your sister. I tried, but it's not realistic. In fact, why would I wish that on either of you? I want you to be individuals; unique but yet so similar in that you are sisters who are loved so much. But one thing is the same. I love you more than you will ever know. I look forward to you experiencing the same feelings with your own children some day.

In the meantime I promise to love you deeply, let you be your own person, love you for being you, learn from you, and take you all in every day since I know you will grow up way too fast. I will also try to remember how thankful I am for you, and how much of a blessing you are, even when you are crying, fighting, arguing, or flashing your attitude. You are my daughter and I love you more than you'll ever know. Welcome to our family! We're proud to have you!

Love,
Mommy

Hopefully my posts won't be as sappy once I get it all out of my system.
